Working with the Whole Person
What is Internal Family Systems?
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is an evidence-based, trauma-informed approach that helps individuals understand and work with the different “parts” of their inner experience.

Internal Family Systems
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a non-pathologizing, trauma-informed approach developed by Richard C. Schwartz that understands thoughts, emotions, and behaviours as adaptive responses rather than signs of disorder. Instead of focusing on diagnosis or deficits, IFS emphasizes curiosity, compassion, and the belief that all parts of the self have protective intentions, supporting individuals in developing a more respectful and empowered relationship with their inner experience.
Non-pathologizing means understanding a person’s thoughts, emotions, and behaviours as meaningful responses to their experiences—rather than viewing them as signs that something is inherently “wrong” with them.
Instead of labeling or diagnosing as the primary lens, it emphasizes curiosity, compassion, and context (e.g., “this makes sense given what you’ve been through”) and is commonly used in approaches like Internal Family Systems and other trauma-informed, anti-oppressive frameworks.

The Benefits
Research on IFS demonstrates its effectiveness in reducing symptoms of depression, anxiety, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), while improving emotional regulation, self-compassion, and overall psychological well-being. By approaching thoughts, emotions, and behaviours as adaptive rather than pathological, IFS supports individuals in developing a more compassionate and less reactive relationship with themselves.
IFS is particularly well-suited for trauma therapy, as it emphasizes safety, pacing, and nervous system regulation. Clients often experience reduced internal conflict, increased clarity, and improved interpersonal functioning as they learn to relate to their internal world with curiosity and compassion. As research continues to grow, IFS is increasingly recognized as an effective therapeutic approach for fostering deep, sustainable healing and resilience.
